Did you know…frozen foods are sometimes fresher than fresh?  Foods destined for the freezer are selected at the peak of freshness and flavor and quickly frozen within hours utilizing an advanced flash-freeze process.  This process maintains the food’s quality and vitamin content, without adding chemical preservatives.

Freeze Food Rapidly

  • The “Thaw Law” – Defrost foods in the refrigerator, microwave or under running water.  Never defrost food on the kitchen counter.
  • The “Bacteria-Free Decree” – Wash hands and cooking surfaces thoroughly, and often, to avoid cross-contamination and the spread of harmful bacteria.
  • The “Two Hour Rule” – Perishable food should not be left at room temperature longer than two hours.

  • The “Danger Zone” – This is the range of temperatures where most bacteria multiply rapidly, between 40ºF (refrigerator temperatures) and 140ºF (most raw meats should be cooked thoroughly to an internal temperature of 160ºF to kill harmful bacteria).

Your food and physical activity choices everyday affect your health.  By eating right and being physically active, studies have shown that you may reduce your risk of many chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain cancers.

The USDA recommends:

  • Make smart choices from every food group.
  • Find your balance between food and physical activity.
  • Get the most nutrition out of your calories.

Making smart food choices should include a focus on fruits and vegetables.  The USDA Food Guide Pyramid recommends 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.  The Produce for Better Health Foundation suggests “5 A Day The Color Way” and encourages a daily “colorful” selection of tasty veggies and fruits.

Think frozen when you’re purchasing vegetables and fruits – the choices are endless, they are fresher than fresh in providing nutrition and vitamins, there is no waste or spoilage, and they are available any season, anytime!
