Cool Family Fun

Staying active plays a major role in staying healty. Here are some ideas for exercise and family fun:

Set a good example. Be active and get your family to join you. Have fun together. Go for family walks after meal times. Play with the kids and/or pets. Set up a home gym or maybe join a health club together.

FamilyEstablish a routine. Schedule regular times for family activity throughout the week, whether it’s cycling, walking, swimming, jogging and /or working out. Adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily; children 60 minutes everyday.

Move it! Limit recreational screen time (television, video games and computer) to less than 2 hours per day. Instead of sitting through TV commercials, get up and move. When talking on the phone, lift weights or walk around. Put on some music and dance.

Give fitness-oriented gifts. For birthdays, holidays and other special occasions, select gifts that encourage physical activity with your family member’s skills and interests in mind – active games, sporting equipment, sportswear and gym memberships are just a few good gift ideas.

Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is a great idea for the family, whether you plan it for inside or out. The idea is to find all of the items on a list and return them to a designated place as quickly as possible. There are many ways to organize a hunt, and you can play as individuals or on teams. Here are some ideas to consider:

  • An ABC Hunt – have someone in your family create a list of items from rooms all over your house. Each person/team takes the list and crosses the items off as they are found.
  • A Themed Based Hunt – have individuals or teams search for “things you wear,” “hot things,” “small things,” “red things,” etc., and write them down. Those with the most on their list win.
  • A Camera Hunt – have someone make a list of items to gather, inside and/or out. Participants in the scavenger hunt carry digital cameras and take photos of the items as they find them.
  • A Nature Hunt – search and gather items from nature like dead flowers, leaves, tree bark, small rocks, moss, feathers. etc.
